Even with a long weapon you still are only able to hit like 3 at a time. Taking on a hoard is still very challenging. You still need zombies to line up correctly to take advantage of multi hit, and that can be a challenge.

There is a mod for that, it's called multihit limiter. It allows you to toggle what weapons, the strength and fitness you need and the weapon skill needed to activate multi hit. To be fair, short 1-handed weapons aren't that easy to multi-hit, it's actually very hard.
